The Searle Family – A Brief History

1982

THE EXPANSION OF THE NURSERY

In 1982, they bought the twenty acre property known today as Searle Brothers Nursery, Inc in SW. Ranches, Florida. The nursery grew larger over time as the family developed newer growing techniques and refined older ones. Along the way, they built a reputation for excellence. They quickly became known for producing well-grown plant material and for building an ever expansive collection of varied plant species.

1981

FIRST SEARLE BROTHERS NURSERY

In 1981, the first Searle Brothers Nursery opened in Pembroke Park on a one acre plot across from the original AT&T building. Shortly thereafter, Frank and his three sons, Jeff, Larry and Randy, decided to open another, larger more expansive nursery to meet the ever growing demand for plant material.

1980’s

THE PASSION BEGAN

After a visit to Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens in the late 1980’s, Jeff Searle became interested in exotic palms, involving him strongly in the plant family. It eventually created the passion that drives both himself and the nursery to this day.

1953

NURSERY CROTON OPENING

Frank Searle, also known as ‘Pops’, continued on, opening a nursery for Crotons in 1953. Specializing in 15 cultivars, the Croton nursery was the first of its kind in eastern Broward County.

1910

THE TOMATO FARM

In 1910, he came to South Florida to work on the Flagler Railroad. During this period, he started a successful tomato farm in Hallandale and the nursery legacy began.

1895

THE LEGACY STARTED

The Searle legacy of horticulture extends back to the late 18th Century, when Charles Francis Searle, father and namesake of nursery patriarch Frank Searle, came to the United States in 1895, settling in New Jersey.
